PERSEUS project aims to identify the most relevant pressures exerted on the ecosystems of the Southern European Seas (SES), highlighting knowledge and data gaps that endanger the achievement of SES Good Environmental Status (GES) as mandated by the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). A complementary approach has been adopted, by a meta-analysis of existing literature on pressure/impact/knowledge gaps summarized in tables related to the MSFD descriptors, discriminating open waters from coastal areas. A comparative assessment of the Initial Assessments (IAs) for five SES countries has been also independently performed. The comparison between meta-analysis results and IAs shows similarities for coastal areas only. Major knowledge gaps have been...

Contamination chimique des eaux côtières méditerranéennes, les projets MYTILOS et MYTIMED ArchiMer
Andral, Bruno; Galgani, Francois; Cadiou, Jean-francois.
The MYTILOS and MYTIMED project were launched to draw up a preliminary report on coastal chemical contamination on a Western Mediterranean scale (continental coasts of the Balearic Islands, Sicily, Sardinia, Corsica and Maghreb) and a part of the Eastern basin (Southern Italian and Sicilian coasts, Greece), based on a standard methodology developed on the French Mediterranean coast by Ifremer and Rhone Mediterranean & Corsica water board since 1996. From 2004 to 2007, 174 mussel stations were installed and recovered 3 months later along the Mediterranean shores. The analysis of 40 chemical substances has been carried out on mussel samples. The results show that the most highly impacted areas are urban and industrial centres and the mouth of major...

Enjeux pour l'environnement marin en Méditerranée. Une approche possible : la directive cadre européenne stratégie pour le milieu marin ArchiMer
Romana, Louis-alexandre; Cadiou, Jean-francois.
The Mediterranean is a semi enclosed sea considered as a hot-spot for biodiversity. Its ecosystems are subjected to strong pressures due to human activities and climate change. An ecosystem approach is needed to address these challenges. The European Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) which aims to achieve good environmental status by 2015 is part of this logic. The MSFD concerns a wide range of descriptors including physical, chemical and biological parameters in order to assess the status and the various forcing exerted on ecosystems. In the Mediterranean Sea, an added challenge is to establish with non-European countries a shared view at the scale of eco-regions.

Lessons learned from an intercalibration exercise on the quantification and characterisation of microplastic particles in sediment and water samples ArchiMer
Cadiou, Jean-francois; Gerigny, Olivia; Koren, Š.; Zeri, C.; Kaberi, H.; Alomar, C.; Panti, C.; Fossi, M.c.; Adamopoulou, A.; Digka, N.; Deudero, S.; Concato, M.; Carbonell, A.; Baini, M.; Galli, M.; Galgani, Francois.
An intercalibration exercise on the characterisation of microplastics in marine sediment and water samples was carried out among five laboratories involved in the implementation of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) in their country. The samples were prepared by mixing cleaned natural sediment and sea water with microplastics sets made of particles of various polymers, shapes and colours. Overall, the errors on total counts were under 25% in absolute value. The risk of non-detection and loss of particles is greater than the risk of contamination during sample analysis. Significant differences are observed among particle types. It appears difficult to obtain reliable and comparable data on the colour of microplastics. A comparison of the errors...

MESURHO : a high frequency oceanographic buoy at the Rhone River mouth ArchiMer
Cadiou, Jean-francois; Repecaud, Michel; Arnaud, Mireille; Rabouille, Christophe; Raimbault, Patrick; Radakovitch, Olivier; Meule, Samuel; Gaufres, Pierre; Pairaud, Ivane.
As the current main source of continental fresh water discharge in the Mediterranean Sea, the Rhone River inputs are a key forcing for ecosystems of the Gulf of Lions in the western basin. In order to better characterize the exchanges at this key interface, an oceanographic buoy has been installed at the Rhone River mouth in June 2009 for high frequency multiparameter measurements with bottom, water column and air sensors. Data are sent in near real time towards an onshore data center.

Pelagic habitats in the Mediterranean Sea: A review of Good Environmental Status (GES) determination for plankton components and identification of gaps and priority needs to improve coherence for the MSFD implementation ArchiMer
Varkitzi, I.; France, J.; Basset, A.; Cozzoli, F.; Stanca, E.; Zervoudaki, S.; Giannakourou, A.; Assimakopoulou, G.; Venetsanopoulou, A.; Mozetic, P.; Tinta, T.; Skejic, S.; Vidjak, O.; Cadiou, Jean-francois; Pagou, K..
At present there is no consistent approach for the definition of Good Environmental Status (GES) and targets in the Mediterranean Sea, especially for Biodiversity Descriptors, according to the Article 12 of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD). The use of plankton indicators in the Mediterranean Sea refers mostly to pelagic habitats in coastal waters and to case studies connected with environmental pressures, e.g. in the Adriatic, Aegean etc. The aim of this review is to study the existing biodiversity indicators for different plankton groups in order to compare GES definitions for the Biodiversity Descriptor and identify the relevant gaps and priority needs to improve coherence for the MSFD implementation across the Mediterranean. For these...

Precision and accuracy of fish length measurements obtained with two visual underwater methods ArchiMer
Rochet, Marie-joelle; Cadiou, Jean-francois; Trenkel, Verena.
During the VIITAL cruise in the Bay of Biscay in summer 2002, two devices for measuring the length of swimming fish were tested: 1) a mechanical crown that emitted a pair of parallel laser beams and that was mounted on the main camera and 2) an underwater auto-focus video camera. The precision and accuracy of these devices were compared and the various sources of measurement errors were estimated by repeatedly measuring fixed and mobile objects and live fish. It was found that fish mobility is the main source of error for these devices because they require that the objects to be measured are perpendicular to the field of vision. The best performance was obtained with the laser method where a video-replay of laser spots (projected on fish bodies) carrying...

Pressions et état de la contamination chimique marine dans le voisinage d'une grande ville côtière méditerranéenne, le cas de Marseille ArchiMer
Sauzade, Didier; Andral, Bruno; Gonzalez, Jean-louis; Pairaud, Ivane; Verney, Romaric; Zebracki, Mathilde; Cadiou, Jean-francois; Boissery, Pierre.
Marine pollution is one of the priority issues of the Mediterranean environment. This pollution comes from multiple sources including large coastal cities which are considered as hot-spots. The METROC project objective is to assess gross and net chemical contaminant flows related to large Mediterranean coastal cities, with a first application to the Marseilles area. The methodology consists of i) assessing the present state of the chemical contamination of the coastal environment; ii) assessing inputs to the sea from sewage, small rivers and storm water run-off; and iii) modelling the fate of some key contaminants, in order to attempt to establish a balance between inputs and exports towards the open sea. This short article presents a synthesis on these...
